Firefox 3 was set to release to users at 1pm EST on Tuesday June 17th. I've been following the Firefox 3 story for the past couple of weeks. From Release Candidate 2 to Release Candidate 3 and a release date. I even got in touch with the people at Gunniess World Records to get the inside workings of how to set a World Record for software download in a single day.

I went to SpreadFirefox.com and pledged my support to Mozilla.

Finally, after 34 months of development, Firefox 3 was set to be released today. The last time I checked, there were well over 1 million people who had pledged their support along with me. So, at 1pm today I dutifully went to GetFirefox.com to download the browser and was met with an error message.

It looks like the majority of the other million plus pledged did the same thing and the system essentially crashed. The good people at Mozilla are working hard to get their system back online, and at 3 p.m., EST, I was finally able to access the download page. I started the download and watched as the indicator bar pushed itself toward halfway complete.

Then it froze at 45 percent and is still sitting there.

But someone has a good sense of irony. While I was reporting that the Firefox 3 download page had crashed, I received an email from none other than Mozilla.

"Are you ready to make history? Are you ready to set a World Record? Today is Download Day. To become part of the official Guinness World Record you must download Firefox 3 by 17:00 UTC on June 18, 2008, or roughly 24 hours from now."

Good to know that the company is still spreading the word about their browser and encouraging downloads.
