Someone's Knocking At The Door: New Deadbolt Security The Wireless Way

A new Web-enabled keyless door locking system lets homeowners and their guests in and can keep monster-in-laws and other undesirables out.

The Schlage LiNKsystem, unveiled at this week's CEDIA (Custom Design & Installation Association) trade show, provides deadbolt lock keyless entry. Users can access codes that they activate, delete or disable via the Schlage LiNK Web portal or mobile application, as well as through a digit push-button keypad.

In developing the product, Schlage teamed up with Panasonic Consumer Electronics Co., using its Remote Monitorings solutions. Schlage LiNK owners can install Panasonic IP cameras and view realtime video of their home via the Schlage LiNK online portal or mobile applications. Panasonic IP cameras come preloaded with software for user configuration. There is a monthly subscription to receive 100 MB of memory to store the IP camera video.

Through the Schlage LiNK online portal, homeowners can also program user codes for specific days and times, receive text or e-mail notifications when certain codes are used and track codes that have been used in a 90-day period.

Schlage LiNK door locks use wireless Z-Wave Bridge, which communicates with the locks and other home automation products and plugs into an Ethernet port on the home computer's Internet router. A light module plugs into any standard three-prong electrical outlet.

Developed by Zensys Inc., Z-Wave is a wireless RF-based (radio frequency) communications technology. The Z-Wave protocol stack is embedded in the chips, and Flash memory is available to the manufacturer/OEM for application software, according to the Fremont, Calif.-based company.

Available in October, the Schlage LiNK Starter Kit retails for $299 and includes one Schlage LiNK deadbolt or lock, a wireless Z-Wave Bridge and a compatible light module. Additional Schlage LiNK deadbolts or locks cost $199. In addition, there is a $12.99 monthly subscription fee to use the Schlage LiNK online portal and mobile applications.

Carmel, Ind.-based Schlage is a subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, Montvale, N.J.
