Microsoft is offering a free application for Apple's iPhone before making the software available for its own Windows Mobile platform.

Microsoft added the Seadragon Mobile application to the Apple iTunes App store on Saturday. The software lets users browse images on the iPhone and then, by tapping their fingers, zoom into them with resolution up to 10 gigapixels, all while remaining online.

Seadragon was developed by Microsoft's Live Labs operation and is part of the vendor's Photosynth system for patching a series of images together to create a 3-D environment.

Microsoft opted to offer the application for the iPhone before other smart phones because the iPhone has accelerated graphics capabilities, according to the Website TechFlash which quoted Alex Daley, group product manager for Microsoft Live Labs.

Microsoft is also believed to be working on a voice-activated search application for the iPhone and for Blackberry devices.
