Perhaps taking a page from Google's Gmail, Hulu has officially rolled out its own version of a laboratory, Hulu Labs.

Hulu.com is a streaming video Web site that hosts content from NBC, Fox and Universal. Movies and television shows are streamed to users on demand. Since its launch, Hulu.com has streamed Presidential debates along with television stalwarts like "The Office" and "The Daily Show."

Hulu Labs is an initiative by the team to invite users to provide feedback to the Web site to better enhance the experience of watching TV on the Web.

"To help us learn from user feedback even earlier in our development lifecycle, we're excited to open up a new Hulu Labs section on the site today. At Hulu Labs, we'll provide sneak peeks at some of the upcoming releases from our product roadmap, some of which are personal projects and hobbies our devs have been cooking up," Eric Feng, CTO of Hulu, wrote on the company's blog.

Some of the upcoming projects Hulu plans to share with users through its Labs are updates to the recommendation system, custom widgets the team will create and time-based view for better browsing.

The company kicked off the Hulu Labs initiative by rolling out the Hulu Desktop. Desktop allows users to download an application that makes finding video easier, and presents it in a rich, full screen format that can be controlled with a mouse and keyboard or any six-button PC or Mac remote control.

"Hulu Desktop was built by a small group on our engineering team (two devs, one designer, one product manager) who asked themselves one day: how can we make it easier for users to immerse themselves in the great shows and movies Hulu is fortunate to have access to? Our answer was to build a new PC and Mac application that gives users the option to step outside of their browser, keyboard and mouse and into something different," wrote Feng.

Hulu does take the time to note that the Desktop application is still in Beta and that changes are likely to occur as the development team tweaks the product.
