Yahoo Falling Behind In Visitors, Visits, Views

World Wide Web

The number of unique U.S. visitors to Yahoo sites rose a mere 4 percent in the period from January to April, compared to a 10 percent growth for the Internet overall, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

During that same period, visitors spent about 11 percent less time on Yahoo measured in minutes, while total Yahoo page views fell 13 percent. This compares to double-digit increases in both categories by the Internet in general, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The bad news for Yahoo piles on top of data from a comScore report from earlier this month showing that Facebook has passed Yahoo in terms of online display ad impressions.

In that report, comScore estimated that Facebook lead all online publishers with 176 billion display ad impressions for a market share of 16.2 percent compared to Yahoo, which had 132 billion impressions for a market share of 12.1 percent.

However, it’s not all bad news for Yahoo. comScore this month also reported that Yahoo was the only major search engine provider to report a significant growth in searches.

The number of searches using Yahoo rose 0.8 percent in April compared to March, compared to an anemic growth of 0.1 percent for Microsoft, followed by 0.1 percent dips by both the Ask Network and AOL and a 0.7 percent drop by Google, comScore reported.

Yahoo has not been taking itself for granted. Company CEO Carol Bartz on Monday used a fireside chat at the TechCrunch Disrupt event in New York City to discuss her company’s innovations, including some new social networking plans, as shown in a video which can be viewed by clicking here.
