LogicLibrary Beats Rivals To The Punch With Product Update

Now available, Logic-Library's Logidex 3.5 serves as a meta-data catalog from which software developers can manage and reuse various assets for building an IT project. Assets are anything from reusable code snippets to best practices, development patterns or compliance information, said Greg Coticchia, president and CEO of LogicLibrary, Pittsburgh.

As services-oriented architectures begin to take hold, the ability to manage reusable assets has become an especially attractive concept as developers strive to build reusable software bits, said Ron Schmelzer, senior analyst at ZapThink. So far, few vendors have released products specifically for software development asset management, although IBM Rational has expressed interest in the technology. Aside from market leader LogicLibrary, Flashline, Infravio, XRegistry and Metalect are "playing around" in the space, Schmelzer said.

Developers can populate the repository built into Logidex 3.5 with existing in-house assets taken from enterprise software and data stores. The software also includes out-of-the-box assets such as core J2EE patterns and Microsoft Patterns and Practices.

Jana Crowder, client services executive at IT consultancy and solution provider Noblestar, Reston, Va., said the desire to drive down the cost of business and optimize existing resources has sparked interest in products such as Logidex.

"In the last few years you've gone from time-to-market considerations to cost savings," Crowder said. "This is another area where [customers] can save money if they can get to the [existing] assets and reuse them."

Logidex 3.5 includes new support for UDDI governance, allowing developers to cull the most relevant Web services from UDDI registries, Coticchia said. It costs $10,000 per CPU or $1,000 per developer seat.

LogicLibrary works with a crop of regional solution providers through its Logidex Service Alliance program. The vendor also has a host of strategic partnerships to integrate Logidex with tools such as IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer, Microsoft Visual Studio.Net, SAP NetWeaver Developer and the Eclipse open-source IDE.
