Microsoft Contributes To Open Source Site

Microsoft Corp. has contributed its FlexWiki collaboration tool to SourceForge.Net, the third release from the software giant to the open-source development site, both organizations said Tuesday.

The experimental tool is based on a concept called WikiWiki, which is a Web site that allows any user to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows that content to be edited by others. David Ornstein, a lead programmer for Microsoft's digital documents group, developed FlexWiki.

The latest contribution under the Common Public License is the third to SourceForge.Net. The other two were Windows Installer XML and Windows Template Library.

"FlexWiki is an innovative web-based collaboration tool, and, judging by the success of the first two Microsoft projects, our audience is actively responding to Microsoft's open-source projects," Patrick McGovern, director of SourceForge.Net, said in a statement.

Both of Microsoft's previous releases are in the top 5 percent of projects on the site.
