Corel's Painter IX has greatly improved performance over the previous version, and now boasts one of the fastest rendering engines of any graphics tools on the market. A new oil painting system allows users to apply different paint colors and brushstrokes right onto images without a rendering delay.

Painter's oil and water painting applications have also advanced, and look incredibly realistic. The software even allows paints to stay in a 'wet' mode, allowing users to modify a surface dynamically. The software is compatible with both Mac and Windows platforms.

Collaboration tools let multiple users work on a single canvas simultaneously. In a network environment, Painter can save each user's specific settings and preferences, including differing versions of an image.
