Quantum's GoVault: Backup For The SMB

Quantum is addressing the backup needs of SMBs with its new GoVault removable drive storage solution. Like tape drives, GoVault uses removable cartridges to store data, but the cartridges are based on hard-disk technology rather than magnetic tape.

Yosemite Backup software comes bundled with GoVault, but the drive also is compatible with most popular backup software.

The GoVault system consists of an intelligent dock and removable hard-disk cartridges that measure 3.37 inches wide by 4.4 inches deep by 0.96 inches high. The dock has a 3.5-inch form factor that expands to 5.25 inches using an included rail and bezel kit—making it easy to install in just about any system. The dock has a SATA II interface that is compatible with the latest motherboards and SATA host bus adapters. SATA and power cables also come with the drive.

Compatible with all versions of Windows, the GoVault software automatically sets transfer rates in the Windows OS to Direct Memory Access (DMA) operation, which improves performance by allowing access to system memory without taxing the CPU.

The GoVault data cartridges are rugged and are given a 10-year shelf life. Quantum claims that the cartridges can safely withstand a drop from up to one meter. The cartridges are offered in native capacities of 40 Gbytes, 80 Gbytes and 120 Gbytes and can be password protected. The SATA II interface allows a maximum data transfer rate of 34 MBps and an average around 26 MBps. That equates to a backup speed of about 94 Gbytes per hour.

Ideally, three GoVault cartridges should be put in rotation to ensure proper protection. One cartridge should be kept in the dock so that a backup can be performed at any time; a second cartridge containing a recent backup in the event of a system restore; and a third backup cartridge should be kept off-site.

The basic GoVault package, which includes one 40-Gbyte cartridge, costs $299. Street prices for the cartridges are around $110 for 40 Gbytes, $170 for 80 Gbytes and $260 for 120 Gbytes.
