Quantum late Tuesday said it completed its acquisition of Advanced Digital Information Corp. (ADIC).

In May, San Jose-based Quantum originally said it would purchase ADIC in a $770 million deal. that would make Quantum one of the top independent disk-based and tape-based storage hardware and software vendors

The two companies have been preparing for the acquisition by bringing their customer and channel programs into sync. With the close of the acquisition, Quantum said in a press statement that it will continue to sell and support all current Quantum and ADIC products and work with both legacy channel and distributor partners to do so.

Quantum also said it plans to finalize its sales, marketing and service organization and all customer-facing positions by the end of next week.

Rick Belluzzo, chairman and CEO of Quantum, told CRN in June that the combined company will be one of the few storage vendors focused on the channel to be able to push the development of storage hardware and software independently of a system platform, unlike competitors such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard or Sun Microsystems.

"It's about building a large, independent solution supplier," Belluzzo said then. "We didn't want to be in a position where, if we had a new idea or technology, we have to go to the OEM and say please, please, please, please try this."

The acquisition makes Quantum the third largest independent storage vendor after EMC and Network Appliance, according to channel sources.

Quantum executives were not available for comment.
