Iomega Plugs NAS Into Home Networks

Iomega, an EMC company, introduced its Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive aimed at providing easy-to-use networked storage for digital home users.

The new drive, available in 500GB or 1TB versions, plugs into a router to provide shared storage to PCs, Macintoshes, and even Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation 3 gaming systems.

The drive includes EMC's LifeLine software bundle. This includes EMC Retrospect Express backup software, which allows users to choose files and folders for scheduled automatic backups from all the PCs and Macs on the network and automatically backs up changes to data, as well as online backup with EMC's MozyHome online backup service.

The Home Media Network Hard Drive supports iTunes and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certified devices in order to save, store and stream digital content to those devices. It includes a Gigabit Ethernet connection to plug into the router, as well as a USB port to add a shared network printer for multiple computers or an external USB drive for incremental storage capacity.

The 500GB model is slated to list for $159.99, while the 1TB version is expected to be priced at $229.99. Both are scheduled to start shipping early this month. The MozyHome online backup service includes 2 Gbytes of free online storage, with online storage available for $4.95 per month.
