NovaStor Sells Online Business To Focus On Channel

NovaStor, one of the early developers of online Storage-as-a-Service, has sold its storage-hosting business in order to focus on software that turns solution providers into storage service providers.

The company this week is also revamping its online storage software offerings with the unveiling of new versions for service providers and traditional resellers.

NovaStor last week sold its online storage hosting business to longtime partner Data Storage Corp., a Garden City, N.Y.-based provider of online storage and disaster-recovery solutions.

The sale helps reinforce NovaStor's core business by removing a potential sales conflict with its solution providers, said Mike Andrews, managing director of the Simi Valley, Calif.-based company.

"We are an indirect channel company," Andrews said. "We work with online backup providers. With our own service, we were selling direct."

NovaStor's online storage business, which it started 10 years ago, consisted of about 100 customers, and it was profitable because of the low overhead, Andrews said.

NovaStor this week is changing the name of its NovaNet Web, its software for helping service providers provide data backup and availability via the Web or an intranet, to NovaBackup xSP, Andrews said. The company also introduced a new version of that software, NovaBackup Remote Workforce, for sale through traditional solution providers.

NovaStor this week is also renaming and introducing new versions of its HiBack enterprise data protection software, including NovaBackup Enterprise for corporate solution providers and NovaBackup Data Center for service providers, Andrews said.
