Western Digital on Tuesday released a new low-cost 4-TB My Book external storage appliance targeted at Mac users.

The company's new My Book Studio Edition II appliances can be purchased with up to two 2-TB SATA hard drives. The drives can be configured for RAID 0 to enable maximum use of the 4 TB of capacity, or RAID 1, which mirrors the two drives to protect data in case one of the drives fails.

The My Book Studio Edition II is formatted for Mac computers, and is compatible with Apple's Time Machine automatic backup feature. The appliance offers four interfaces, including eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0.

The external storage solutions also include Western WD GreenPower Technology, which the company said cuts the power consumption of the My Book Studio Edition II to about one-third that of typical dual-drive external storage systems, leading to cooler operation without the need for a fan.

The My Book Studio Edition II is designed to be user-friendly, with a capacity gauge to show at a glance how much space is available on the system. Users can also replace the drives inside the appliance themselves. Finally, the included software performs automatic and continuous data backups to ensure data is protected.

My Book Studio Edition II dual-drive storage systems are available through retailers with a list price of $649.99, which includes two 2.0-TB hard drives.
