From the May 07, 2007 issue of CRN
Ordinary desktop systems don't put much strain on their power supply, which is why a typical 300- or 400-watt supply usually will suffice. But systems containing multiple dual- and quad-core processors, RAID arrays with multiple hard drives and high-end graphics cards with integrated cooling fans need far more than 400 watts of power to operate.

Tagan TG-1100-U96Tagan takes the "why mess around" approach with its over-the-top TG-1100-U96 power supply. Rated at 1100 watts, the TG-1100-U96 isn't likely to falter no matter what kind of load it holds.

Intended for use in multicore servers and workstations, high-end gaming systems, video production platforms and so on, the power supply features patented dual transformer technology and is compatible with the Intel EPS12V 2.9 standard. It offers an operating efficiency of more than 80 percent and comes with two built-in 80mm fans that provide ample cooling yet generate less than 30 dB noise at full load.

The TG-1100-U96 power supply provides universal support for different motherboards with its split 20+4 main motherboard connector and separate auxiliary four-pin and eight-pin 12-volt connectors. This makes the power supply compatible with 20, 20+4, 24+4 and 24+8 motherboard power plug configurations.

Workstations with multiple graphics cards are common these days, and the TG-1100-U96 power supply can support them with ease with its four separate six-pin PCI Express cables.

Weighing in at more than 7 pounds, the TG-1100-U96 features 10 Serial ATA connectors and three standard Molex connectors. Also included are four SATA-to-Molex adapters for converting four of the SATA plugs to Molex.

Lastly, for the utmost in abrasion resistance, not to mention good looks, most of the cables are sheathed in vinyl tubing over steel braiding.

The Tagan TG-1100-U96 power supply carries a price of $399 and comes with a three-year warranty.
