The Test Center's quest to build the "Ultimate PC" achieved this: the highest-performing computer ever to power up in our lab, but with a much lower price tag than previous Ultimate PCs. Here's how we built it.
The CPU
When Intel released its Core i7 Nehalem processor earlier this year, performance testing showed it was the most powerful CPU of any kind the Test Center had ever seen. Designing a system around the Core i7 965 Extreme, at 3.2 GHz, seemed a good way to start.
