The Daily App: EasyCrop For BlackBerry PlayBook

One of the more compelling hardware-based features of the BlackBerry PlayBook is its 5-megapixel, rear-facing camera. For a 5-MP camera, it’s clear and crisp and simple to use for still photographs. It’s certainly at or near the top of the list of tablet-based cameras we’ve examined.

The problem initially was that there wasn’t a lot of great software to fully extend the use of the camera. But one app, EasyCrop for the BlackBerry PlayBook, developed by Orison Technologies, is a fast, easy and effective cropping tool.

Available for free from Research In Motion’s BlackBerry App World, EasyCrop downloaded and installed in about two minutes. It allows for simple, touch-based cropping of photos on the PlayBook. It’s intuitive, and allows for cropping by just dragging the lower right corner of a cropping box and manipulating the corners around the area you wish to save. Photos are saved right to the gallery of the PlayBook.

Of course, Adobe – the maker of Creative Suite 5.5, including PhotoShop – has promised to port its creative software to the BlackBerry PlayBook platform; if that happens, the quick-and-dirty apps like EasyCrop may find adoption much more difficult. Until then, though, it’s a simple, nifty app for photo cropping on the fly.
