Recalling Ramsey's Reserve

Overall, Ramsey was reserved: little criticism toward the police department that had botched the initial investigation or the media and law enforcement community that pinned Ramsey, then CEO of mid-range system distributor Access Graphic, and his late wife, Patsy, as the prime suspects in the country's hottest crime story. Ten years later, a new suspect has emerged. John Ramsey, however, still keeps his cool, urging everyone not to jump to conclusions regarding the guilt or innocence of John Mark Karr, who was arrested last week in Thailand after admitting he killed the 6-year-old. As the media circus ramps up coverage in the wake of Karr's extradition to the U.S., we should all share Ramsey's reserve.

In the end, nothing the the pundits and so-called experts squawk about will matter. The DNA and handwriting samples collected at the crime scene when compared with Karr's will mean so much more. At this point, that's all we and John Ramsey can hope for. Karr's story, as it stands, is full of holes. But maybe those holes will close and form a foundation of guilt. Maybe not. Least of all, it might shake up new leads and invigorate the Boulder DA and related investigators to press on and find the real killer.

CRN and VarBusiness were the first media Ramsey granted in depth interviews with following his and his wife's initial plea to find the killer. On that July day, Ramsey sat in a conference room Keystone Resort in Colorado during Access Graphic's New Frontiers partner conference. The company's PR rep had asked us not to talk about the murder. We refused and Ramsey agreed to discuss it. To our surprise Ramsey spoke freely, but he was prepared. Before we got to ask if he knew who murdered his daughter, he said this:

"From my standpoint, I'd call out the National Guard if it was in my powers," he answered, when asked if law enforcement officials were doing enough to capture the killers. "Everybody that I've talked to that is involved and has experience says it will be solved."

It has been 10 long years, during which Ramsey has endured the loss of his daughter and his wife, who succumbed to ovarian cancer in June. Unfortunately, he has to endure yet another media circus. For his sake and his family's, we hope Ramsey's last sentence quickly comes true.
