The Daily App: Studio Basic Lite For iPad
The tablet form factor, with multi-touch capability and photo support, is on the brink of leading to some spectacular new graphics and imaging capabilities that will provide functionality that used to only be the province of big, heavy, $4,000 RISC workstations.
Yes, we remember those RISC-UNIX days all too well. But it is perhaps a strong testament to the continued workings of Moore’s Law that significant new graphics capabilities are now available in the light, flexible, cost-effective form factor of the tablet.
We looked at Studio Basic Lite for the iPad, and came away convinced that we’re on a new trajectory for content and data creation on mobile devices. A free download from the Apple iTunes App Store, Studio Basic Lite allows for on-the-go, touch- and finger-driven graphics creation and editing that shows much potential. The app allows for by-touch drawing and design, importing of photos, and integration of photo. It allows for sharing a graphic or image directly from the app to Twitter or Facebook, or via email, and it also allows for saving images right onto an iPad.
Some caveats: It’s a new app so we found it to be a little buggy. For example, it crashed several times while we were manipulating photos, but stopped after we rebooted the iPad. Also, there’s no ready mechanism for adding text. But it’s functionally enough for sketching out quick ideas or images, and for sharing.
