The Daily App: ReadMyEmail (beta) for iPhone

We’re so close to full voice-navigation of content and data on smartphones and tablets that it’s almost time to start tapping our feet in anticipation.

With Apple’s Siri beta on iPhone 4S, we now have a feature that will read us stock prices, weather updates, text messages and more. But Siri still isn’t ready to read us email on our iPhones while we’re on the go – a bewildering shortfall in functionality.

But there is another app, ReadMyMail (beta) by Intone Networks – a free download from the Apple iTunes App Store – that gets us another half-step in the right direction.

ReadMyMail will do almost what its name says: it provides a synthetic voice that will read the subject, date and “sent by” information for email delivered to a single Gmail account. Just open the app, and it will go down your list of new inbox messages and let you know what’s waiting for you. The app, though, does not read full email messages. So, in other words, it’s a tease.

Still, it’s a free app and it’s still in beta. But it’s one more indication of how close we’re getting to voice-based delivery of all information on a smart device.
