The Daily App: ooVoo Video Call

Being early to market will only get you so far. Skype pioneered free Internet video calling in 2003, and now boasts hundreds of millions of subscribers. But if one-to-one video calling just won't get the job done, you might consider today's daily app, ooVoo.

Like Skype (which was acquired by Microsoft in 2011), there are ooVoo clients for Android, iOS, Mac OS X and Windows. Introduced in 2007, ooVoo also works through Web browsers and can support video chats with as many as 12 callers (six in the free version). The latest Android version (released in February) now supports Ice Cream Sandwich and a slew of new devices.

The mobile versions work over WiFi, 3G and 4G and can call other mobile devices, computers and Web clients in groups of up to five additional callers. All voice, video and text chat from one ooVoo client to another are free; low rates apply to ooVoo-to-landline or -mobile calls. Like ooVoo Premium, the free version also supports HD 720p video quality, can record, save and send videoss and even includes technical support. You'll need the premium version to record calls or to reach out to other mobile phones and landlines directly.
