Why You Should Care: It's a challenge for customers to keep tabs on data when it walks out the door on a notebook, USB flash drive, MP3 player, digital camera or some other portable storage device. CoSoSys helps them keep the good stuff locked down.

The Lowdown: The heart of Transylvania isn't the likeliest place for a security vendor to emerge from, but that's exactly where Cluj-Napoca, Romania-based CoSoSys is making a name for itself by securing portable storage devices.

Now, with the opening this month of its San Jose, Calif.-based office -- its first in the U.S. -- the vendor is looking to channel partners to bring security solutions based on its technology to market.

As the portable storage market matured, Roman Foeckl, CEO and founder of CoSoSys, saw an opportunity to

create an offering to secure portable devices in the business environment. One result is Endpoint Protector 2008, a product that provides policy-based data loss prevention, enforced encryption, and audit and compliance features for data on the go.

"The problem is that people copy data on a notebook or a flash drive and then take it home," Foeckl said. "Endpoint Protector limits which portable storage devices can be used on a company's network by allowing an administrator to approve it. The device will be encrypted, so if it's lost, it isn't a big deal."

CoSoSys is dedicated to developing a strong channel presence, Foeckl said. "We need the channel because partners know their customers the best. CoSoSys can't be everywhere, and customers need a local reseller that can deliver our solution in the best way possible," Foeckl said.
