All Thumbs On Your iPhone? Google Debuts Voice Search App
The New York Times is reporting that the search by voice app will be available in the Apple iTunes store for download today.
On the surface, the way the application works is rather straightforward. An Apple iPhone user opens the app and asks a question. That information is then converted into a digital file and sent to Google's servers, which determine the critical words of the query. Once those words are identified, the query is passed along to Google's search servers and an answer is spat back out to the iPhone user.
No questions appear to be off-limits with the Google voice app. IPhone users can do a search for the best pizza place in the area or ask a question pertaining to sports, the height of Mount Everest or anything else that might come to mind.
The description in the Apple iPhone app store sums the voice search up nicely: "Voice Search—speak your queries instead of typing them. Voice Search is supported only on iPhone, and works best for North American English accents. Other languages coming soon."
