The rumors are being fueled by Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu, who released a research note to his customers citing sources within Steve Jobs' operation in Cupertino, Calif.

Wu's assertion is driven by the notice Apple sent to channel partners late last week warning them that there could be a draw-down in the supply of iMacs. Wu believes that is indicative of a product upgrade or refresh.

According to Forbes, Wu's sources have told him that the next refresh of the iMac line of personal computers will include both dual-core and quad-core options for customers looking to beef up their computing power.

The difference in chipsets would create gradient in the iMac market, with the dual-core chip power machine costing less than the quad-core machine.
