Microsoft Shoots Down Zune Rumors On Twitter
The tweets, which came from the Twitter profile "officethemovie," hinted at the potential release of new hardware from Microsoft that would coincide with the launches of the Palm Pre and Apple's iPhone 3.0. Unfortunately, that particular account was not officially linked to Microsoft.
The cause for the confusion surrounding the Zune may have come from the fact that Microsoft did link to the "officethemovie" Twitter account on its official Web site. It seems that company was confused, thinking that the tweets came from the marketing team responsible for Office 2010 The Movie.
Instead, the imposter account used the platform to promote an article on iPhone piracy.
Oops.
Since then Microsoft has come forward and disavowed the false account. Brian Seitz, a Microsoft spokesperson, told NeoSeeker that the rumor mill should quiet down.
"That account is bunk. Not run by Microsoft so I would not put much stock in what they say. The real Office movie account is http://twitter.com/office2010movie," he said.
Still, the rumors had just enough of a grain of truth to get the blogosphere buzzing over what may be coming from Microsoft. A new version of the Zune—Microsoft's portable music player—is expected later this year.
It's no secret that Microsoft is working on retooling its Window's Mobile platform. Code-named "Pink," and expected to be available on the Verizon Wireless network, the potential mobile device would pair the Windows mobile OS with Zune capabilities and might vault the Redmond crew into the same discussion as the iPhone, Pre and Research In Motion's BlackBerry.
The bad news for Microsoft supporters, however, is that project Pink is running into delays and may be in danger of collapsing.
