Powerset says it commissioned a study by Peanut Labs which turned up some interesting numbers:

That sounds about right. Pre-Internet, CliffsNotes played a similar role although professors tended not to care on the theory that if a student relied on them, it would be pretty evident in the work product. It looks like Wikipedia has raised the bar.
