T-Mobile G1: Closer To Exchange Support

The G1 phone does not currently offer Exchange support. Google executives touted this as an opportunity for third-party developers.

Funambol, a provider of open source push email and mobile sync products, announced the Funambol Android Client to sync contacts from a variety of sources to the G1 handset by means of its Mobile'We' portal service.

Mobile'We' allows users to sync between a variety of products and services. The Android Client will let users access the service to sync contacts from online sources like Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, and desktop applications like Microsoft Outlook.

While the Funambol project is not Exchange support by any stretch of the imagination, it's definitely a step in the right direction. Being able to bring contacts from Outlook via the portal service would make the G1 that much more useful in the business environment.

Funambol said in a statement, "This demonstrates once again the talent and speed of our community to rapidly support the latest wireless phones."

The Funambol Android Client will be available on Android Market after it opens. Until then, it can be downloaded from Funambol Forge.
