New PostgreSQL On Deck; Microsoft Posts SBS 2003 SP 1

EnterpriseDB wants to offer a PostgreSQL of its own. So if you love the open-source database, but don't want to get it from Pervasive or other sources, this Edison, N.J. vendor might have a deal for you.

It is now offering public beta of its PostgreSQL implementation from its Web site. The company says it's improved on the database's enterprise features, including what it calls compatibility with apps written for Oracle databases. Full availability is slated for this summer. Support on the beta release is free, but it is unclear what maintenance and support will be on the GA implementation.

PostgreSQL is lauded by many in the open source community for its enterprise functionality and features where it is generally considered well ahead of MySQL.
