Up Next: Google Calendaring

The Web's been abuzz with talk that Google will unveil its long-rumored "gCal" calendar app at Esther Dyson's When 2.0 confab, tomorrow at Stanford.

Since Google's vice president of product management Jonathan Rosenberg will address UBS' 33rd Annual Global Media Conference-- the self-billed "longest running show on Wall Street tomorrow in New York, it could be that the stars have aligned for this news.

Interest is so high there's a Google group dedicated to discussion of "gCal" whether or not it will ever exist. Smart money is that it will, and soon.

With gMail already going strong, a calendaring and scheduling app is on the wish list for many who want to loosen Microsoft Outlook's grip. Still, do we really want Big Brother in Mountain View, viewing our appointments and to-do lists?

While Microsofties maintain "somewhat hopefully-- that gMail has snuffed out any resistance to trading privacy for freebie services, some are unconvinced. How many people, after all, use gMail as their ONLY e-mail account?

I would bet that nearly 100 percent use it as their secondary (or tertiary) service. As for scheduling, imagine a world where you enter your doctor's appointment and are then inundated with drug or personal care ads.

One word: EWWWWWWWW!

For those gMailers who want C&S now, some are saying good things about this RSS model.

Google had no comment on gCal.
