Enterprises vying for a smooth migration from on-premises data centers to the cloud have a new option that could save precious time and money. Safely and cost-effectively move critical VMware workloads to the cloud using NetApp Cloud Volumes Service datastore support for Google Cloud VMware Engine. NetApp calls it a true “lift-and-shift migration solution.”
Because Google Cloud VMware Engine is a native VMware vSphere environment that’s fully integrated with Google Cloud, enterprises can shift VMware application workloads to the cloud without significant modifications. Using existing VMware HCX and vSphere replication tools, they can move VM-based applications in bulk or move selected VMs with no downtime. Add to that the volume reshaping and dynamic service-level capability of Cloud Volumes Service, and you have the makings of an easy journey to the cloud and protection from over-provisioning once you get there.
Why migrate VMware workloads to the cloud?
Each cloud migration is driven by a use case unique to the business behind it. But there are some universal truths worth considering. For instance, substantial resources are required to build and maintain a data center. Modern enterprises considering the cost of on-premises infrastructure in terms of time, capital, and human resources may discover it’s far more cost-effective to rely on the technical expertise of Google Cloud to take care of the management, networking services, back-end infrastructure, and operating platform.
Also, enterprises that maintain a steady application development schedule must contend with highly data-intensive virtualized enterprise applications and databases. As application workloads and datastores grow, so does the need for additional high-performance, high-availability storage. By untethering storage from compute, Cloud Volumes Service allows IT managers to augment native Google Cloud VMware Engine datastores without provisioning unneeded compute power.
This ability to decouple storage and compute is one of the most powerful aspects of Cloud Volumes Service. The platform allows enterprises to separate data from VM disks onto individual SMB shares or NFS volumes, providing greater cloud mobility and cost efficiency and the option to deploy additional storage volumes without over-provisioning compute nodes.
The time may soon come when you or your customers need to put together a savvy data center exit initiative. Know that you can rely on NetApp to quickly and efficiently transition from on premises to the cloud.
