Q:
Where does Veritas fit in the small-business market?
\
\
A:
Certainly, our Windows-based Backup Exec, Veritas Storage Replicator, and the Intelligent Disaster Recovery and Desktop/Laptop options play there. . . . A lot of customers have valuable data on their desktops and laptops, but they are not backed up because [the process] is thought of as expensive and complicated. We work with customers and partners to address these concerns. … The main problem with disasters is not from terrorism or the weather, but from human error. The Disaster Recovery option helps build a data recovery disk so it is easy to recover from a problem.

Q:
Other backup solutions are priced from free and up. Why would a small business pay $500 and up for Veritas Backup Exec?
\
\
A:
The name brand. The long history of tight integration with Microsoft. And scalability. It does grow.

Q:
What do you think about EMC’s move into the small-business data-protection space with the acquisition of Dantz Development?
\
\
A:
Veritas didn’t just wake up one day and feel we needed to get into this space. We’ve been working to get customers thinking about this for a long time. While Dantz is in small business, EMC is new to it. Also, customer surveys say small businesses are leery of large companies moving into the small-business space who just wake up and say, wow, this is hot, and then … dumb-down their enterprise products for small businesses.
