SP1 Ships For SBS 2003

“As long as one follows best practices and takes time to understand the environment and its specific related issues, everything should go smoothly,” said Jason Harrison, president of Harrison Technology Consulting, Nashville, N.C., who has migrated customers to SBS 2003 SP1.

icrosoft’s Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 has caused some frustration in the field, but partners say the additional security and reliability are worth the effort.

Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., on May 19 released the third security-focused service pack for Windows, this time for Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003. Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 were released earlier.

“It’s clear that the focus for Microsoft is to give even more security to their customers using SBS 2003 because that’s the theme in this whole SP1 release cycle,” said Per Werngren, president of IDE, a partner in Stockholm, Sweden.

SBS 2003 SP1 is a rollup of the latest service packs and updates for Windows SBS 2003. Its components include Windows Server 2003 SP1, Exchange Server 2003 SP1, Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP1, Windows XP SP2 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. The premium edition also includes SQL Server 2000 SP4 and ISA 2004.

Partners say SBS 2003 SP1 is simply an aggregate of patches for its server components but that deployment can be challenging for users that did not patch any of those servers as updates became available.

Microsoft advises customers to deploy the Windows Server 2003 SP1 that comes as part of SBS 2003 SP1 to prevent conflicts. For example, SBS 2003 SP1’s updated Internet Connection Wizard differs from the new Security Configuration Wizard in Windows Server 2003 SP1.
