Eval Unit: Express Ethernet DI-604
But until recently, these products cost $120 or more. Now D-Link has broken this price barrier with the DI-604 Express Ethernet frhub.
What do you get for so little dough? Plenty. The device comes with a four port 10/100 hub, and includes Network Address Translation, MAC filtering, a DHCP server and IPsec pass through support. These are fairly standard items on any router. You can also block certain URLs or domains or IP addresses to protect your family from particularly heinous Web sites, and the ability to declare one PC on a DMZ to allow Web hosting or playing certain Internet-based games.
The menu structure leaves something to be desired: the screens are designed with buttons across the top and down the left-hand side and that can be confusing to new users. Still, most users won't even see these menus because once the device is set up, it should work without any problems and any need to reconfigure it.
The DI-604 may have a low-end price but offers plenty of features, and should be considered by any integrator who has to price a competitive network installation but doesn't want to scrimp on features.
