Getting Started In UMPC

Adam Snide, co-founder of Coral Springs, Fla.-based Build Your UMPC LLC, an online reseller that sources, configures and packages only UMPCs, offers insights into building such a practice.

Market yourself as an expert: We try to stay away from the MIDs [mobile Internet devices]. We wanted to stay focused on one core product. When you come to us, and you have a lot of companies and individuals coming to us, they say, 'Wow, you guys are the experts, because this is all you do.'

Specialize, but offer a range of products to meet different preferences: On the different interfaces, I think there's plenty of room for both of them. I really do. I don't think there's going to be a winner, I don't think there's going to be a loser. I talk to people who love the graphic interface of their iPhones, but they also love their OQOs. I just don't think there's going to be one device for everybody.

Understand that UMPCs are not mainstream, at least not yet: I almost think that the OQO is like driving a Porsche. It's not for everybody. But if the CEO of a company is showing off his UMPC, and he has a Sony, it's like he has a PlayStation in his hand. If he has an OQO, there's nothing better. And the service is great too. They have a very good service team.

Target users who need the power of a UMPC in the field. Don't try to upsell those who don't: The UMPC will be the tool of IT management professionals. It's ideal for managing systems and networks from a mobile base. We're working with IT departments so they can access servers remotely with a device that fits into their pockets. But in the broader [mobile] sales force, not as many people are jumping on board.
