Microsoft Certified Applications Developer

With its Microsoft Certified Applications Developer certification, Microsoft hopes to build and nurture a large community of .Net-centric developers and to acclimate developers to the world of Web services.

The MCAD certification focuses on the design of enterprise solutions. Tools deployed by MCADs include Visual Studio.Net, BizTalk Server, SharePoint Portal Server, Commerce Server and Content Management Server. Not surprisingly, then, on the scorecard rankings the certification’s greatest strength was in its ability to generate new, incremental business. Solution providers estimated that having MCADs on staff generated an average 18.4 percent increase in sales, placing it third on this criterion.

And while ranking ninth in return on investment, 39 percent of solution providers reported that ROI has been increasing over the past 12 months, which gave it a solid fifth place in ROI improvement.

The certification is important because “it’s a structured way to build competencies internally,” said Anthony Ferris, vice president of sales at Neudesic, an applications developer and solution provider in Irvine, Calif. “And as a certified Gold partner, we leverage certifications to satisfy our requirements.”
