Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator

Solution providers value the Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator certification as a must-have for their business, but not necessarily because they are counting on it to take them into new territory.

In the scorecard rankings, the MCSA placed among the top three in importance but came in 10th on return on investment improvement and ability to generate new business.

As one of Microsoft’s basic certifications, the MCSA covers the skill sets necessary for troubleshooting and managing the Windows platform. Solution providers say it is a good interim step between the entry-level Microsoft Certified Professional and higher-level Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and it is required by Microsoft’s partner program.

“The MCSA certification is interesting to partners serving the small-business community because competent MCSEs tend to migrate toward the enterprise space, making it difficult to attract and retain them,” said Marc Harrison, president of Silicon East, Manalapan, N.J.

While many small businesses maintain their own desktops, they rely on solution providers to handle servers, Harrison said. “MCSAs are ideally qualified for this role,” he said.
