The Rise of AMD's 64-Bit Opteron Processor
Opteron and its desktop sister, Athlon 64, are significant because they support 64-bit applications but can also run existing 32-bit software.
Intel answered back at AMD in the summer with a 64-bit-capable version of its Xeon server chip. In 2005, the battle between Opteron and Xeon is sure to heat up. At the same time, AMD is expected to begin surging in the desktop market as sales of Athlon 64 take off. That's because Microsoft is slated to release a 64-bit version of Windows XP, which will support Athlon 64.
