Seagate Technology's new Momentus 7200.2 hard drive accommodates that sturdy requirement by using perpendicular recording technology to pack in as much as 160 Gbytes of storage into a 2.5-inch hard drive, and securing stored data with the addition of Seagate's free-fall protection.
Perpendicular recording technology not only increases data capacity, but also improves performance by allowing more bits to travel under the heads in a single revolution. An additional performance boost is provided via the hard drive's 7,200-rpm rotational speed, which offers 25 percent better performance over 5,400-rpm drives.
Seagate's optional free-fall protection has a sensor that detects changes in acceleration. When acceleration equal to the force of gravity is detected, the heads are quickly parked away from the platters to prevent what's known as a head crash.
This free-fall protection activates within three-tenths of a second and is effective for a fall of as little as 8 inches, thwarting permanent damage to the disk and the loss of data.
Seagate's Momentus 7200.2 hard drives are designed for mainstream notebook PCs, RAID enclosures, small form-factor desktops and servers, copiers and printers and applications where performance and size are critical. The drives are offered in 80-, 100-, 120- and 160-Gbyte capacities. Free-fall protection is optional on the 80- and 160-Gbyte models.
