Why You Should Care: 3Tera's AppLogic cloud computing platform offers low-cost operations and enables service providers, systems integrators and others to deliver cloud capabilities to their customers.

The Lowdown: 3Tera is emerging from the cloud computing hype and making a name for itself as a reliable and low-cost cloud computing platform for enterprises, service providers and systems integrators looking to take advantage of the ease and portability of applications in the cloud.

With its AppLogic offering, a turnkey cloud computing platform for running and scaling Web applications, 3Tera arms partners with cloud solutions and utility computing services for transactional and streaming applications in their data centers.

Barry Lynn, 3Tera CEO, said cloud computing is currently causing a "major disruption in IT" and end customers are turning to hosting partners and resellers to find their paths in the cloud.

With that in mind, 3Tera recently launched a pair of cloud computing certifications to get its partners and resellers up to speed and ensure they know their stuff before engaging their customer base with promises of cloud-hosted apps. The Certified Cloud Operator and Certified Cloud Architect Certifications are seals of approval that show partners and cloud providers are adept at deploying and operating cloud services and designing, provisioning and managing distributed applications.

Currently, 3Tera has more than 4,000 companies running at least one application on its AppLogic platform.

For partners, Lynn said, certifications in cloud computing will be increasingly important as the technology evolves and takes hold. It will arm them with the ability to better sell and build cloud offerings.

"The importance will grow as cloud computing grows, and it's going to explode," he said. "There are huge opportunities."
