PalmSource Partners To Speed Mobile Linux Development

PalmSource has said it expects to deliver the version Linux version of its platform for so-called feature phones by next summer. MontaVista Software's Linux platform is aimed more at cellular operators. The two companies said Tuesday they have joined each other's developer's program.

The goal is to make it easier for handsets developed using the Linux Palm OS to work over cellular operators' networks, the companies said in a statement.

"PalmSource is further demonstrating its commitment to enabling Palm OS, the mobile industry's leading application framework, to run on Linux," Albert Chu, vice president, business development for PalmSource, said in a statement.

"We look forward to working closely with PalmSource to deliver best of breed products that combine the best of the Mobilinux and PalmSource operating systems, making it easier for handset manufacturers to deliver compelling, Linux-based mobile handsets," Peder Ulander, MontaVista's vice president for marketing, said in a statement.
