Microsoft Apologizes For Swastikas In New Office System

In an open letter posted on the Redmond, Wash.-based developer's Web site, Stephen Sinofsky, senior vice president for Microsoft Office said, "Due to an unintentional oversight, we failed to identify, prior to the release, the presence of two swastikas within the font. We apologize for this and for any offense caused. Microsoft is taking immediate measures to remedy the issue for all customers."

The offending symbols are found within the Bookshelf Symbol 7 font, which is included in such applications as Microsoft Word 2003, Excel 2003 and PowerPoint 2003.

In response to the error, Microsoft has released a utility that will strip the entire font, and its swastikas, from Office applications. It can be downloaded from the Microsoft support site.
