Adobe Acrobat Now On The Server

Now the San Jose, Calif., vendor is taking a third approach in its quest to expand PDF creation capability to more desktops,a key piece in its intelligent document strategy that envisions PDF files at the center of ad hoc and formal workflows in the enterprise.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

>> User-based pricing: $28 per users with 1,000-user minimum.
>> Server-based pricing: $22,500 per server; OEM and volume discounts available.
>> Transactional or contractual licensing program options; begins shipping through software resellers Nov. 26.

The company's Intelligent Documents Business Unit plans to start shipping next week a server application called Adobe Acrobat Elements Server. The application will enable desktop users to convert Microsoft Office, Corel WordPerfect, Adobe PostScript and Photoshop documents, as well as standard image file formats, into PDF files.

"Administrators flat out don't want to install a lot of client software," said Larry Jordan, president of Keycode Systems, a solution provider in Minneapolis. "I think this is the best approach,to make it a server software."

Marty Krasilczuk, an Adobe product marketing manager, said some users prefer the client software and others will prefer the Elements Server, while still other users will take a mixed approach. "It really just provides additional flexibility," she said.
