UPDATE: MySQL Launches Admin Tool, Teams With JBoss, Zend

database

Called MySQL Administrator, the open-source tool is designed to provide an easy-to-use GUI to help manage and monitor databases. It is slated to be demonstrated Wednesday at the LinuxWorld Expo in New York.

The goal is to give DBAs a way to configure servers, monitor database activity and perform backup and restore tasks more easily, the company said. The administration tool, as well as the database, will be available under both commercial and general public license.

In addition, MySQL and The JBoss Group have formed a partnership to promote their open-source products. Atlanta-based JBoss Group offers services and support around the JBoss J2EE-based application server, which is popular with solution providers and developers.

Marc Fleury, president of The JBoss Group, said the partnership between his group and MySQL will be strategic, with the two companies aligning sales and marketing activities to promote the use of MySQL and JBoss software together.

"In a sense, MySQL has been pushing the professional open-source message [just as The JBoss Group has]," Fleury said. "[We're] trying to reassure large companies that open-source%85is a safe choice. That's a difficult thing to do."

MySQL also is teaming up with scripting vendor Zend Technologies to ensure that the MySQL database and Zend's PHP Web scripting products work well together.

Though its product is typically positioned as a commodity database, MySQL is adding enterprise capabilities that could make it a more direct competitor with pricier offerings from Oracle, Microsoft and IBM, industry observers say. Last year, MySQL acquired Alzato and its clustering capability.
