IBM did not disclose the cost of the acquisition. Guardium is based in Waltham, Mass.

IBM said it would integrate the Guardium technology into its Information Management Software portfolio. Guardium is the company's 28th acquisition to support its information management strategy. IBM said the Guardium technology also expands the range of offerings available through its recently announced Business Analytics and Optimization Consulting organization.

"The integrity of data is critical if an organization is going to use data as a strategic asset," said Arvind Krishna, general manager of IBM's Information Management, in a teleconference. "This acquisition is another significant step in our abilities to help clients govern and monitor their data, and ultimately make their information more secure throughout its lifecycle."

Guardium's software is used by businesses to protect data from unauthorized access or changes, both from outside and within an organization. The technology identifies patterns and anomalies in data access and usage, helping businesses detect fraud and maintain data integrity.

Along with preserving data integrity for a business's own operational and decision-making purposes, IBM said the Guardium technology is a critical element for automating IT governance processes such as complying with government data protection requirements and such standards as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
