New Oracle Management Tools Offer Integration With Sun Systems

Oracle also is offering new resources, including plug-ins and connectors for the new release, for channel partners through the vendor's Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) portal.

Enterprise Manager is Oracle's system for managing database, middleware, applications, operating systems, servers, virtual systems and storage systems. More than three-quarters of all Oracle customers use Enterprise Manager as a corporate standard, said Oracle president Charles Phillips in a presentation Thursday.

Enterprise Manager 11g more tightly links business performance to IT through such tools as the new version of Oracle Real User Experience Insight, which provides performance and usage statistics; Business Service Management for analyzing the performance of business services; and Business Transaction Management, which provides visibility into business transactions.

Phillips touted the "application-to-disk" management capabilities of the new release of Enterprise Manager. New in the release, for example, is the ability to deploy Oracle WebLogic server, and full support for Oracle Database 11g R2 and Oracle Exadata Version 2.

The new release provides more extensive abilities to manage hardware, virtualization software and operating systems through the Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center. That includes Sun hardware and Oracle Solaris, which Oracle said covers the entire lifecycle of physical and virtual Sun environments, including Oracle VM for SPARC and Solaris Containers.

Those capabilities should prove key as Oracle seeks to tighten links between Oracle software, and Sun hardware and software products Oracle acquired when it bought Sun for $7.4 billion in January.

"If you're using multiple Oracle products, you should be getting incremental value," said Richard Sarwal, Oracle senior vice president of development, arguing that integrated management tools help organizations get the most out of integrated IT systems. "That's what we think is the breakthrough here, that you can instrument the entire stack."

Topping the list of new partner resources is the OPN Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center Knowledge Zone, which helps partners quickly access tools and community knowledge. The site also offers plug-ins and connectors through the Oracle Validated Integration program to help solution providers integrate third-party software with Oracle applications.

Oracle said the site could help channel partners become certified as specialists in Oracle Enterprise Manager and Oracle Enterprise Manager Application Quality Management tools. Last year Oracle revamped its partner program to put more emphasis on channel partners becoming certified on specific Oracle products.

More than 500 people from Oracle partners are recognized as specialists on Oracle Enterprise Manager and Oracle Enterprise Manager Application Quality Management, Oracle said.
