Enterprise Door-Opener: HP Develops Appliances Around SAP's HANA

HP is developing a line of prepackaged appliances, called AppSystems, that are based on HP ProLiant servers and combine SAP's HANA in-memory database with SAP's Business Suite ERP applications.

HP, Palo Alto, Calif., also is offering new services to help businesses implement SAP HANA and SAP Business Suite software on-premise and to deploy them through HP Enterprise Cloud Services.

While the services will be more focused on larger companies, the new HP AppSystems appliances will be sold through HP channel partners, which can offer services such as data migration and system updates around the devices, said Paul Miller, vice president of converged appliances, systems and solutions, with HP's Enterprise Group.

"This is where our channel partners can deliver," Miller said in an interview at SAP's Sapphire Now conference, at which SAP HANA has been a major focus. "We see this as a huge opportunity where HANA is hot," Miller.

And Miller sees that leading to additional opportunities for partners relating to data management and implementation/deployment services for ERP and CRM applications. "That's where the significant return on investment is for HP and our enterprise channel partners. This is a great door-opener for enterprise channel partners to make money," Miller said.

The HP AppSystems appliances are based on the HP ProLiant DL980 server with HP PREMA architecture, offered in 1-, 2- and 4-TB memory configurations. HP said the appliances would be capable of supporting huge amounts of data and, with HANA, processing that data many times faster than traditional servers.

The 1-TB edition is available now, with the 2- and 4-TB editions to begin shipping shortly. Partners purchase the software license keys from SAP.

HP and SAP have some 50,000 shared customers "and we are jointly working to move them to HANA" from traditional relational database systems, Miller said.
