X1 To Search Lotus Notes In Upcoming Beta

X1 Desktop Search currently indexes files from a slew of applications and messages from e-mail clients such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, and the mailer in Mozilla.

When the beta debuts, users will be able to search through Notes messages and file attachments, contacts stored in Notes, and locally replicated Notes and Domino databases.

"I'm hooked on X1," said Ray Ozzie, the creator of Notes and the current chief executive of Groove Networks, in a statement. "I've quite happily used Notes' native indexing features [but] since experiencing X1's Notes integration, there's no going back."

X1 has been making other deals and moves in desktop search as it tries to defend its turf against encroachers like Google and Microsoft. In December, 2004, A1 licensed its technology to Yahoo, which used it to launch its own desktop search effort this month. Also in January, national ISP EarthLink added X1-provided search features to its homegrown e-mail application.
