Data isn’t just for processing transactions. Businesses and organizations today understand that data is a strategic asset in the same class as people and financial capital. Not only is it needed for running day-to-day operations, data is key to major initiatives such as digital transformation. And when effectively managed, analyzed and utilized, data can provide intelligence and insight that lead to new opportunities and competitive advantages.

The problem is that managing and analyzing data is becoming a more complex task. The total amount of data created and replicated worldwide reached 64.2 zettabytes in 2020, according to market researcher IDC, and will grow at a CAGR of 23 percent to 181 zettabytes in 2025.

Even more problematic is the fact that data, once tidily stored in central databases and data warehouses, is increasingly scattered across widely distributed IT environments including on-premises and multi-cloud systems.

All this creates an opportunity for solution providers. The global market for big data technologies and services is expected to grow from $162.2 billion in 2021 to $273.4 billion in 2026 with a CAGR of 11.0 percent, according to a MarketsandMarkets research report.

To help solution providers that operate big data practices—or are thinking of starting one—CRN provides the Big Data 100, an annual list of key vendors in the big data space with innovative, forward-thinking products and services designed to help solution providers support enterprise organizations in their management and utilization and analysis of data.

As in prior years, this 10th edition of the Big Data 100 list includes many of the IT industry’s biggest vendors and established suppliers of data management and business analytics products. But it also includes startups and young companies that are developing breakthrough technologies that solution providers can adopt to provide their customers—and themselves—with a competitive edge.

This year’s list is made up of vendors in six categories of big data technology: business analytics, database systems, data management and integration software, data warehouse systems, big data systems and platforms, and data science tools. Slide shows for each category, along with a slide show of the emerging big data vendors across all categories, will be running throughout the week.
