"The storage software market continues to exhibit steady growth, particularly in the replication and backup and archive segments, driven by customer requirements of trying to protect and secure information in an increasingly complex environment," said Rhoda Phillips, research manager for IDC Storage Software, in a statement Monday.

"This demand is in response to the growth of information and the impact of the requirements to have more information online with greater protection throughout the entire business cycle," the statement continued.

EMC held the top position with a 29.2 percent market share, although its margin dropped slightly from a 30.7 percent share in the year-earlier quarter. Symantec was in the second position with a 19.7 percent share while IBM was in third with 11.5 percent. Network Appliance (6.7 percent) and Hewlett-Packard (6.5 percent) were in a statistical tie as they rounded out the top five positions.

The market research firm said storage software revenues for the 2005 full year totaled $8.9 billion.
