Lexmark Rolls Out New MFPs, Printers

The Lexington, Ky.-based company unveiled the X642e multifunction printer, a $1,499 monochrome unit for workgroups. The X642e has a touch screen, prints documents at 45 pages per minute (ppm) and features printing, copying, scanning and faxing capability.

"Beginning [Tuesday], Lexmark will have refreshed its entire MFP lineup," said Stephanie Morris, product marketing manager for high-end MFPs at Lexmark. The company said it had integrated a 5.7-inch touch-screen user interface into the X642e, whereas some previous products had hard-button input.

"We have now moved to a touch screen, so that makes it a lot easier to navigate and makes it more intuitive to get to the functions that all MFP users need," Morris said. Solution providers will be able to do some customization of user icons on the touch screen, she said.

The X642e follows the shipment of the Lexmark X644e earlier this year. The new product has less functionality in some areas, such as one-side-at-a-time document scanning, but its street price is $1,000 less, Lexmark said.

Lexmark also said it will begin shipping a new scanner, the Lexmark 4600, as a modular option with the higher-end X646ef MFP, which carries a street price of $4,499. The bundled solution includes the scanner and a T644dtn laser printer.

"You've got a better, more vivid touch screen," Morris said, adding that the scanner has a smaller footprint and scans at a higher image resolution.

The 4600 scanner replaces the 4500 scanner and scans faster--up to 35 ppm in monochrome or 17 ppm in color--with new "scan preview" and "job build" functions. The 4600 scanner is primarily a modular upgrade for Lexmark's T640 printers and comes bundled with memory and peripheral devices to upgrade a printer to an MFP, Morris said.

"In the past, we've had several different scanners we have offered to upgrade our printers to MFPs," Morris said. "Beginning [Tuesday], that will go to just one, the 4600."

In addition, Lexmark introduced two low-end monochrome MFPs: the X340n, which has a 2,500-document toner cartridge and a street price of $349, and the X342n, which has a 6,000-document toner cartridge and a street price of $399.

Lexmark also unveiled the C500n color laser printer, which prints at 31 ppm in black and white and at 8 ppm in color. Priced at $399, the C500n is targeted at small and midsize businesses.
