Adobe Systems' PDF, or Portable Document Format, has become the de facto standard for transporting documents across different platforms and, of course, the Internet. PDF files allow documents to be viewed exactly as they were created, without needing the application that created the document in the first place.

Adobe's free Acrobat Reader program is all that is needed to view PDF files; to create PDF files, one usually needs Adobe Acrobat, which costs $249. But small businesses and start-ups need to keep expenses to a minimum. FinePrint Software's pdfFactory Pro will not only help solution providers save some money, it can help them make money as well.

The non-Pro version of the product, pdfFactory, is a $49.95 utility that converts documents into PDF files. Offering the most commonly used features of Adobe Acrobat, pdfFactory allows any Windows application with printing capabilities to create a PDF file. Multiple documents of different types can be combined, unwanted pages can be deleted and blank pages can be added into the PDF file.

 • PRODUCT NAME: pdfFactory Pro
 • PRICE: $99.95

At $99.95, pdfFactory Pro adds security options including 40- and 128-bit encryption and password protection to prevent unauthorized copying, printing and editing of PDF files. This allows the creation and transmission of secure documents in the PDF format.

PdfFactory Pro installs as a printer. It is a snap to install and just as easy to use. To create a PDF file, one simply initiates the printing of a document and then selects the "FinePrint pdfFactory Pro" printer from the list of available printers. That brings up a GUI that provides all of the PDF file options, including the previewing and saving of the file. Accuracy is good, as engineers could see no difference between an actual printout of the Test Center's Web site and a PDF file of the same page.

FinePrint Software is eager to build relations with solution providers that are interested in bundling pdfFactory with other offerings such as Web publishing systems. Tremendous discounts are available depending on the volume of the license. Discounts are also available for resellers interested in converting the product into languages not yet available.
